On a wide corner lot just two blocks from Eastern Market, a historic 1885 grocery store has been meticulously restored into a 2,500 SF home on the Hill. Over 16 months (2021-2022), the owners served as both design directors and historians, partnering with Sestak Remodeling and Design Cadence to transform the dilapidated structure into a modern, functional, and historically rich residence. Every detail--from solid white oak floors and window treatments to lighting, hardware, and paint--was selected with care and consideration.
The entry features shiplap walls and Victorian-era tile, and a restored original sink anchors the powder room. A sun-filled kitchen boasts custom inset cabinetry crafted by a Pennsylvania maker, soapstone countertops, and a custom, restaurant-grade range hood. The kitchen opens up to an outdoor space, paved with bricks salvaged from the original store, as well as a dining area with a breakfast nook set into the bay window.
At the front of the home, past a dry bar with two beverage coolers, a coat closet, and the powder bath, the pistachio-hued living room with 12' ceilings gleams in southern and western light. On one wall, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves can be accessed with a solid walnut ladder from Putnam Ladder Company, and on the other, a pair of window nooks house storage below. The fireplace surround, discovered during the restoration, is finished with a gas insert from Valor, and the space above the mantel is wired for a Frame TV.
Upstairs, 10' ceilings and solid oak flooring continue throughout. The primary suite, painted in an enviable Farrow & Ball color, includes an impressive walk-in closet as well as a hotel-worthy bathroom with a freestanding tub, Zellige-tiled shower, and dual sinks set in marble. Down the hallway, a laundry room with machines set at hip height hides behind a large pocket door, and two additional bedrooms share a hall bath outfitted with custom storage and a historic window with a glass privacy cover.
In the basement level, found through a hidden door beside the main staircase, a 500 SF space can be used for storage or a playroom. This space has exterior access.
